What's Included in the Growing Smile Journey

A small window. Protection that lasts decades.

Ages 6 to 12 are a pivotal window for dental health: permanent teeth are coming in, habits are forming, and this is often the last easy chance to prevent problems before they set in. At our Hurlingham dental practice, we use these years to protect what's arriving and correct what's forming before either becomes a bigger issue in the teenage years.

  • Professional hygiene and fluoride treatments — to strengthen enamel as adult teeth emerge
  • Fissure sealants — a thin protective coating on the chewing surfaces of new molars, one of the most effective ways to prevent childhood cavities
  • Orthodontic screening — to catch bite and alignment issues early, when intervention is simpler
  • Airway and breathing assessment — since mouth-breathing and snoring in children can affect jaw and facial development
  • Myofunctional habit correction — for thumb-sucking, tongue-thrust, or prolonged mouth breathing

Outcome: Strong permanent teeth, healthy development, and fewer costly interventions down the line.

Why the School Years Matter So Much

A cavity in a permanent tooth at age 8 is a filling that has to last 70+ years. Catching an orthodontic issue at 9 is often far simpler and cheaper to correct than waiting until 15. This journey is built around that window.

The Growing Smile FAQs

Every six months, in line with general guidance — though children with higher cavity risk or ongoing orthodontic monitoring may need more frequent visits, which we'll flag if relevant.

Sealants are a thin, painless coating applied to the grooves of back teeth to block out food and bacteria. We assess each child's molars individually and recommend sealants only where they add real protective value.

It can be. Mouth-breathing and snoring are sometimes linked to airway and jaw development, and we're happy to assess this at a routine visit.
